ITALIA MIA: Music of Renaissance Italy

The viola da gamba arrived in Italy in the late 15th century, and Venice was where it had its greatest flourishing. In this prosperous international setting ruled by cultivated patrons of the arts, an extraordinary synergy arose among composers, musicians, instrument builders, and publishers that led to some of the most beautiful music of the Renaissance. Parthenia Viol Consort with soprano Sherezade Panthaki and lutenist Christopher Morrongiello presents a program of canzonas, dances, madrigals, and motets by composers of the 16th including Verdelot, Arcadelt, Guami and Tromboncino. In this program, the artists use viols and lutes styled on those from the 16th century.

When I Had a Voice

Parthenia presents new works for voice and viols by Phil Kline, Richard Einhorn, Frances Blaker and Christopher DiVincenzo, featuring the World Premiere of No Wind No Rain by Richard Einhorn. Special guest: Elizaveta Kozlova, soprano.

The performance will be followed by a reception. Viol players of all levels are invited to bring an instrument, a music stand and join in a consort reading session during the reception, music provided. Composers are also welcome – bring your new compositions for viols and a group will read through your sketches.

“Continental Connections” in Westport, CT

Internationally renowned early music star soprano Sherezade Panthaki joins Parthenia Viol Consort (hailed by The New Yorker as “one of the brightest lights in New York’s early-music scene”) in a ravishing program of Renaissance and Baroque dances, folk songs, and vocal masterworks from England, France, and Italy. Music by Claudio Monteverdi, John Dowland, Henry Purcell, Pierre Bonnet, and more.

This concert is hosted by the Music & Arts program of Christ & Holy Trinity Church of Westport CT. The concert will be followed by a hospitality reception.

O Clap Your Hands! with Cerddorion Vocal Ensemble

Parthenia Viol Consort joins Cerddorion Vocal Ensemble for a celebration of the 400th anniversary of Orlando Gibbons, featuring a world premiere for voices and viols by Greek-Dutch composer Calliope Tsoupaki.

Les Amours de Mai

Our spring concert features French Renaissance songs and dances marked by grace, balance and a wonderful sense of lightness, especially the song settings of poetry of Pierre de Ronsard by such composers as Claude le Jeune, Guillaume Costeley, Claude Goudimel, Eustache du Caurroy and others.
Parthenia, performing on a consort of viols in the style of those used in the 16th century, is joined by soprano Sherezade Panthaki, Renaissance lutenist Christopher Morrongiello and Caroline Nicholas, treble viol.

Newburgh Chamber Music: Continental Connections

Parthenia Viol Consort reprises its Continental Connections concert program at the Newburgh Chamber Music Series.

Musicologist Cat Slowik joins the ensemble to speak during the performance about the music and connections. After the concert you are invited to join in a hands-on Gamba Faire with Parthenia: have a mini-lesson on a viol, with individual instruction from the performers.
