Parthenia and guests discuss the conception, composition and performance of Sandresky’s 2014 work, John Donne Songs Without Words, commissioned by Parthenia with a grant from the New York State Council on the Arts. We will explore our love of Donne’s poetry, the guiding aesthetic for this work, and talk about learning to use body movements while playing our instruments, and show videos of the 2015 premier.

Parthenia’s planned webcast of ‘A Reliquary for William Blake” with countertenor Daniel Moody, scheduled for Thursday, Feb 25th, 2021 at 7:30pm ET, has been postponed to a future concert season when we can be with you in person.
In the meantime, we warmly invite you to join us for a free online event exploring related William Blake material, co-presented with the Morgan Library & Museum.

Exuberance is Beauty: William Blake, the Viol, and the Book
Members of the New York viol consort Parthenia join Sheelagh Bevan, Andrew W. Mellon Associate Curator, Printed Books & Bindings, and Robinson McClellan, Assistant Curator of Music Manuscripts and Printed Music, in a webinar to explore the “exuberant beauty” of visionary poet William Blake (1757-1827) and the music he inspires in our time. Featuring Will Ayton’s 2002 song cycle scored for viola da gamba and voice, A Reliquary for William Blake, the program will be contextualized with an introduction to the Morgan’s exceptional holdings of Blake’s illuminated printing, such as Songs of Innocence and of Experience, followed by a conversation with curators and musicians.
This online program is co-presented by the Morgan Library & Museum and Parthenia.
